Article and Pics: Cuyahoga Heights 30 Newark Catholic 14

Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

Last night I made my first ever trip to Orrville, Ohio to catch the semifinal game between undefeated Cuyahoga Heights and the Newark Catholic Green Wave. The game was won by the team I felt would win, but it did not play out the way I thought it would.

Newark Catholic had been a team that closed out drives during the playoffs, but on this night, they failed in a gigantic way during the third quarter. Three times they had a chance to, not only tie this one up, but to take the lead. They would cash in once, fumble the ball after a very good run and then it would be poor execution by the offense on some nice calls by the coaching staff and of course some solid defense by the Redskins.

With 9:52 left in the opening quarter, Lucas D'orazio 6-2 / 210 would show some of his top notch skills, with a 13-yard run.
D'orazio, would go on to have an awesome game and basically put the team on his shoulders and carry them to the win.

At the 5:31 mark of the quarter, the Redskins ended their 14-play,70-yard drive, with a 11-yard touchdown reception by
Matt Harris 5-10 / 200. The throw by quarterback, Brett Lowther 6-2 / 175 was spot on. The point after kick off the strong leg of Mark Shafer 6-1 / 150, made this a 7-0 game.

The Newark Catholic offense stayed on the bus through much of the opening quarter, but with 5.5 seconds left Tanner Lake hauled in a nicely thrown ball by, Hunter Chapman 6-5 / 215 and picked up 28-yards.

The Redskins would use 14 plays and go 80-yards for their next score, at the 5:40 mark of the second quarter. The scoring play was a 1-yard run by,D'orazio. The point after kick gave the Redskins a 14-0 lead.

Chapman, who has thrown an alarming amount of interceptions this season, would throw one at the 5:24 mark of the half and this one was the most hurtful one of the season, because D'orazio not only picked the ball off, he took it to the house to make this a,20-0 game. The point after was missed.

With 4:33 left in the one-sided half Chapman would be sacked by the multi-talented, Matt Harris 5-10 / 200 for a big loss.

Just :29 later Chapman showed a glimpse of the talented quarterback, I think he will become, with a long pass completion to Noah Fodor 5-11 / 195, for a first down, on a third and twenty call.

Chapman, who does not have breakaway speed managed to pick up 19-yards on a very good call by the Newark Catholic play caller. The drive continued with a 11-yard completion from Chapman to Mason Peddicord 6-3 / 175, with 59.2 seconds left in the half.

The 11-play,65-yard drive ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by, Chapman. The point after kick by,Nathan Liesen was good, making this a 20-7 game, with 43.6 left in the half.

The third quarter was dominated by Newark Catholic, but they failed miserably to finish drives and the result netted just one score, when they could have, should have had three.

The score came on a 24-yard Chapman pass to Tanner Lake, with the point after making this a 20-14 game, with 37.1 left in the quarter.

Newark Catholic would fumble the ball away after a nice run, when it looked like they would drive for a score earlier in the quarter and on another drive they overcame some poor execution to get the ball down to the Redskins five but a badly thrown pass in the end zone ended the drive.

With 10:23 left in the game,Lowther used his feet to pick up 15-yards on a quarterback draw. His front line manhandled the Green Wave defensive line on this play.

With 7:36 left in the game, the Redskins ended a 12-play,61-yard drive, with a 24-yard field goal to make this a 23-14 game.

The games final score came on a 1-yard power run by,D'orazio with 3:44 left. The point after made the final score 30-14 Redskins. The last drive netted 43-yards and took just seven plays.
