Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

Last night at Paul Culver Jr. Stadium, in Thornville, Ohio, home of the Sheridan Generals, the Newark Catholic Green Wave squared off with a very young Columbus Bishop Ready team in a round two playoff game. The Silver Knights had won the last three meetings between these two schools.

The two teams were scoreless, with both defenses owning the others offense, when Troy Williams JR. sped his way to a 17-yard gain, with 7:42 showing on the first quarter clock. Williams was getting most of the playing time due to an injury to the super stud running back for Ready,Devin Dukes. Dukes from what I was told had a bad ankle, that kept him from cutting. He would show up now and again in this one and have some solid straight ahead runs. Just nine seconds later, Williams would pick up 25-yards all, the way to the Green Wave one-yard-line.Williams would end the 8-play-67-yard drive, with a one-yard touchdown run, with 7:29 left in the quarter. The point after kick by the strong footed Aj Craddock made the score, 7-0.

Hunter(MAN OF STEEL) Chapman, the Newark Catholic quarterback would put the ball on the ground at the 5:21 mark of the quarter and after a long discussion by the men in stripes, Ready was awarded the ball. Chapman, a first year starter for the Green Wave, looks very uncomfortable running the option, the few times the play has been called and this time was no different and the result was one the Green Wave could ill afford to have, as the offense had struggled the entire quarter.

The Newark Catholic defense would bail the offense out as the shutdown, the dangerous Silver Knights speedy and powerful offense.
When the Green Wave got the ball back Chapman was sacked hard by,Charles Omameh 6-0 / 242. for an 8-yard loss, with 1:33 left. From there the ready defense would shut down the Green Wave again and get the ball back for its offense.

Devin Dukes 5-10 / 220, with the injured ankle was able to run over a Green Wave would be tackler and pick up 17-big yards. Defense was the name of the game and the Green Wave defense would recover and get the ball back to its offense a short time later.

Ready had started to move the ball a little and when the Green Wave needed something huge to stop the Ready momentum it would be Mason(QUIET STORM) Peddicord, who came up big, when he picked off an Austin Aiello 5-10 / 145 pass, with 6:31 left in the half and take it to the house. from 32-yards out for a much needed Newark Catholic score. Nathan Liesen locked this one up at seven apiece with his point after kick.

The last big play of the half in this defensive battle came on a fumble recovery by Newark Catholic. Williams put the ball on the ground and out of the pile the Green Wave came up with it.

Newark Catholic had a nice little drive going and with 5:14 left in the third Kyle94 STAR) Gibson busted free for a 12-yard gain, Gibson would be held to 62 yards on 21 carries. The Ready defense as the numbers state did a very nice job in keeping Gibson in check. The 11-play, 71-yard drive came to a close, when Chapman hit the speedy Grant Rausch, who ran away from the Ready defense for a 25-yard touchdown. Chapman made amends for badly missing a wide opened Rauch earlier in the game, that would have been a touchdown earlier in the game. The point after kick put Newark Catholic up,14-7, with 4:33 left in the quarter.

Ready would use an aid winded short Newark Catholic punt to set up the tying score, with 17.5 left in the quarter. The 23-yard drive lasted 4-plays and ended with a one-yard power run by Brandan Burks 5-11 / 215. The point after locking this one up, at fourteen.

Ready would drive the ball to the Newark Catholic five-yard-line late in the game and have four tries to take the lead. The Newark Catholic defense would stand tall as they have all season for the first three plays, as they allowed the Silver Knights just four yards on the first three plays. On Fourth down Gibson and Connor Sheehan hit Ready speedster Troy Williams for a 4-yard loss on 4th-and-goal from the 1 to keep this one tied.

In overtime it looked like Peddicord got his hand on the field goal attempt by,Aj Craddock to set up the winning Newark Catholic drive.
On the first two plays of the Newark Catholic overtime drive the Ready defense had held the offense to minus one-yard. But on third down from the 21-yard-line Chapman found Gibson wide open and after making the catch the 6-2-225 beast plowed through the final Ready defender for the game winning score as the large Newark Catholic crowd erupted like a volcano and a beautiful celebration by a group of young men, who played as hard as they could have.

The Ready running game was led by,Williams who racked up 152 yards on 23 attempts.Devin Dukes had 17 carries good for 84-yards.
