Yesterday afternoon Newark Catholic traveled to Bellaire to battle the Big Reds in a first round playoff game. Neither team entered this one, having the season they wanted, but both had made the playoffs. Newark Catholic entered off of a loss to division two, Watkins Memorial, while Bellaire came in riding a two game winning streak.

Things started poorly for Newark Catholic, when speedster Cameron Lewis fumbled the opening kickoff and making the recovery for Bellaire was,#31 Trace Sechrest, with just nine seconds going off of the clock. The Bellaire crowd erupted, while the Newark Catholic crowd had that deer in the headlight looked,

Mason Ramsey, the talented Bellaire quarterback dropped back to pass, with 10:33 showing on the clock and he found D'eondre wide open, as the Green Wave secondary was playing a little soft, with the result being a very easy 23-yard gain. That would be the only pass play that Bellaire used, on the 6 play,36-yard drive. The scoring play was a 2-yard run up the gut of the Newark Catholic defense by,Tyson Camsky. Camsky is another stout player for Bellaire. The point after kick by,Ramsay made this a,7-0 contest, with 8:38 left in the opening quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, the special team problem continued for Newark Catholic, after fielding the short kick,Sam Bending was leveled by Burney and was held to no gain.

The Newark Catholic passing game has been hit or miss during the season, with first year Junior starter Hunter(MAN OF STEEL) Chapman had struggled some, while other times he looked like a seasoned veteran. On the first play from scrimmage Chapman dropped back and threw a nice little pass to Tanner(GENERAL PRIME TIME) Lake, who made a nice move or two and then outran the speedy Bellaire defense, for a 73-yard touchdown. Senior kicker Nathan Liesen, who has a huge leg, but has been a little inconsistent with accuracy came in and made good on the point after kick, tying this one up at seven apiece, with 8:23 left in the quarter.

After each team had one drive, I think many was shocked to see Bellaire running the ball down Newark Catholic's defense, and the Newark Catholic defense scoring on a 73-yard pass play. Both coaches were changing things up enough early to keep the other guessing. I think both should be given props for changing things up, and more importantly to change them back to the norm, when each offense needed.

Bellaire would by my count begin a 21-play, 80-yard drive with two running plays and one pass play. Those plays total just 9-yards leaving the coaching staff the decision to punt the ball away or go for it. Well, they opted to go for it and with the aid of the nice work done by the offensive line, Camsky easily picked up the first down, making the decision the right one, if you are a Bellaire fan. The quarter still had 2:12 left in it after that big play.

Ramsay would be sacked by Tyke Wilson, for an 8-yard loss, with 49.3 seconds showing on the clock. The quarter would end, with things locked at seven, and Bellaire driving.

Bellaire had the ball first and goal from the one-yard line, but needed four plays to finally get it in the end zone. The score came from Camsky, who plowed his way in. The point after kick was blocked, leaving this a,13-7 game, with 8:05 left in the half.

With 8:05 left and Newark Catholic driving after another short Bellaire kickoff, Chapman dropped back to pass and had a man opened in the end zone, but he threw a little late allowing Burney to use his speed and soft hands to make a huge pick. As I said in the beginning of the article, the passing game was hit or miss.

Ramsay would be sacked on third down by, Sophomore Liam Kirkpatrick 6-1 / 285, for a 9-yard loss, with 1:04 left in the half.
The teams would go to the locker room, with the home team leading by six.

Newark Catholic would need only one-play to take the lead in the third quarter, the play was a 54-yard gallop by Kyle(4 STAR) Gibson 6-2 / 225, who seemed to have shocked many with his speed. Many of the great, very vocal Bellaire fans made some kind of statement about it, after the run. The point after kick was good, giving the Green Wave a,14-13 lead, with 10:10 left in the quarter.

Gibson would show some nice speed and power on a nice 43-yard run, at the 5:09 mark of the quarter, but the Big Reds defense tightened up after that and forced a punt.

With 2:29 left in the quarter and Bellaire now starting to show their prime time passing game, Ramsay dropped back to throw and found a wide opened, Justin Keyser, for a 22-yard score. The point after kick was good, giving Bellaire a one a six point lead.(20-14)

The clock showed 1:15, when Chapman connected with Mason(QUIET STORM) Peddicord 6-3 / 175, for a big 15-yard gain.
Lake would take in a Chapman pass, with 47.2 seconds left in the quarter and pick up a first down, on a third and four situation. Gibson picked up 15-yards, at the 10.1 mark of the quarter.

Just ten seconds into the final frame Gibson would show an all-star like determination as he went 28-yards for the game tying score. Liesen came in to kick the biggest point after of his career and he calmly put it through, to give Newark Catholic a,21-20 lead.

Newark Catholic, who had six sacks on the talented Ramsay, was able to get a gigantic one by Connor Sheehan 5-10 / 170 lineman, with 9:27 left in the game. At the 8:20 mark facing a 4th and 16 at the Newark Catholic 27-yard line, Ramsay was smashed by Noah Fodor 5-11 / 195 and Sheehan, for a 13-yard loss. Many teams would have just quit after the sack, but Bellaire was not one of those teams, and I think each of those young men deserves a round of applause, for showing that no quit in us attitude.

Gibson would pick up 25-yards on two carries, not only moving the chains, both time, but more importantly keeping the clock moving.
The game had 2:24 left and the Green Wave faced a 3rd and 10 to go, when Chapman smooth as ice dropped back and threw the ball into double coverage to Peddicord, who had a little step on both defenders. Peddicore made a Cole Beasley type catch, good for a 36-yard gain. Beallaire would right the ship and get the ball back to its offense, for one more try to win the game.

With :49 left Ramsay was sacked for the sixth time in the game by,Fodor and Sheehan, for a 10-yard loss.
25.2 was left in this one and Bellaire faced a fourth and long, Ramsay dropped back to pass and found a wide opened Burney, who had the ball hit him perfectly in the hand and chest area, but he dropped it and a GREEN CELEBRATION to place at Nelson Field.
