Article: Newark Catholic sinks Northridge Vikings,40-12

Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

Last night at Northridge high school the Newark Catholic Green Wave rolled in Johnstown looking to sing the hometown Northridge Vikings. So far this season for Newark Catholic it has been a very up and down season, where injuries have hurt this team, but caused the coaching staff to build depth and for the Vikings it has been a season that have seen get a win over a,5-4 Minford team and posting two other wins.

Newark Catholic won the toss and as they seem to do all the time, elected to take the ball. On the drive the Green Wave needed just six plays to go fifty-two-yards, to make this a,7-0 game. The drive ended when speedster Cameron Lewis going the final ten-yards. The point after kick by on again, off again by senior kicker,Nathan Liesen was good. There was still 10:03 left in the quarter after the score.

When the Vikings got the ball, they managed to gain seven-yards and then punted the ball away. The Vikings did complete one of two passes on the drive.

With 7;18 left in the quarter Mason(QUIET STORM) Peddicord leaped high into the air, beating double coverage , to bring in the pass thrown by,Hunter(MAN OF STEEL) Chapman to pick up twenty-six-yards. Facing a third and nine, with 5:53 left, Newark Catholic fed the beast known as,Kyle(4 STAR) Gibson and he easily picked up the first down, with a big gain. His front line blew off the ball on this play, making the pickup look easy. With 4:21 left in the quarter, Gibson picked up another first down, when the Green Wave was facing a fourth and one situation. The fourteen play,seventy-one-yard drive ended with a one-yard plunge from Gibson,. The point after increased the Newark Catholic lead to,14-0, with 3:02 left in the quarter.

There was 11:41left in the half, when Chapman used his arm to pick up another Newark Catholic first down, with a fourteen-yard completion. The drive fizzled out shortly after the completion.

It appeared the Green Wave was about to go up,21-0 with 4:55 left in the half, but Chapman threw a poor pass that was easily picked off by Daniel Hatfield. The Green Wave defense made quick work of the Vikings offense and got the ball back to its offense.

The Green Wave was again moving the ball, but on the seventh play of the drive, Chapman threw another horrible pass that was again picked off, this time it was picked by, Hunter Corbin, who easily outran the Green Wave defense to go 70 plus yards for a Vikings score. A two point try was unsuccessful leaving the score, 14-6 Newark Catholic, with 16.3 left in the half.

The Vikings had a pass knocked down by,Sam Wendt with 8:27left in the third and that forced the punting team onto the field. The Vikings were able to gain thirty-thirty-three-yards on the drive before being forced to punt. In the opening half, the Vikings offense totaled just fifty-six-yards.

Gibson would pick up fourteen-yards on a nice run with 6:50 left in the third. Gibson would end the nine-play,seventy-three-yard drive, with a five-yard run. The point after kick increased the Newark Catholic lead to,21-6.

The Vikings had moved the ball downfield to the Newark Catholic fifteen-yard line with a little over a minute left in the third. From there Hatfield scrambled around desperately looking for someone to get open, after finding everyone covered, he used his feet to run in for a score. Peddicore would knock down a Hatfield conversion pass, leaving this a,21-12 Newark Catholic lead, with 1:17 left in the quarter.'

Newark Catholic would stay on the ground much of the 2nd half, as they only threw one pass, while running the ball fifteen times. I am guessing the two bad picks was a big part of this game plan. With 59.2 left in the third Gibson picked up twenty-one-yards. The quarter ended with the Green Wave leading,21-12 and driving for more.

Just eight seconds into the final frame, Gibson picked up eleven-yards, moving the ball to the Vikings four-yard-line. After a Northridge penalty moved the ball to the two-yard-line, Gibson would go the final two-yards for another Newark Catholic score. The point after kick was missed. leaving this a,27-12 Newark Catholic lead.Gibson finished with 136 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. He looked like a man playing against boys in the second half. A large part was because of the work of his offensive line, who seemed to play much better than they did in the opening half.

Peddicord would pick off a Hatfield pass, with 8:54 left in the game and he would take it to the house from about seventy-five-yards out. The point after kick was missed again, this time after a Newark Catholic penalty moved the ball back, causing a longer kick, on the windy night.

Hatfield would be picked off again, with 5:32 left in the game. Making the pick for the Green Wave was,Nolan Jurden. The Newark Catholic secondary can be scary good against the pass, when they are not playing ten to twelve yards off the receiver.

The Green Wave final score came on a sixty-yard run by Cameron Lewis. Lewis is a speed burner, who seldom has his number called. The point after kick made the final score,40-12 Newark Catholic.
