Article and Pics:Newark Catholic 55 Utica 22

Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

This one started out perfectly for Newark Catholic and maybe some somewhat shockingly to the Utica staff. The Green Wave known league wide, for using one-third of the field for what seems 95%of the game, the short side. Last night they showed that they actually knew other area of the field really existed.

With 10:57 left in the opening quarter Hunter Chapman threw a pass to the far side of the field, that Grant Rausch turned into a ten-yard gain. That same combo, Raush and Chapman would strike again, and again it was to the far side of the field, good for a four-yard gain. Just eighteen seconds later that combo again, struck for a seven-yard gain, again going to the far side of the field. Champamn and Raush would connect for a fourteen-yard gain, giving the Green Wave a first and goal at the Redskins nine-yard-line,with 9:17 left in the quarter. The nine-play,seventy-yard drive ended with a two-yard run by Kyle Gibson. The point after kick by Nathan Liesen,g ave the Green Wave a,7-0 lead, with 9:17 left.

After shutting down a lethargic looking Utica offense, the Green Wave needed just one play to score again. The scoring play came on an sixty-four-yard gallop by Gibson, who used some nice down field blocking to work his way to the end zone. The point after kick made this a,14-0 game, with 6:40 left in the quarter.

Once the Green Wave got the ball back, the Green Wave got an eighteen-yard run by Gibson, that took the ball to the Utica three-yard-line, with 5:01 left on the first quarter clock. The four-play drive ended with a one-yard run by Gibson. The point after kick gave Newark Catholic a,21-0 lead, with 4:23 left in the one-sided first quarter.

Watching Utica warm up and then again, watching them come out of the locker room to start this game, they looked like a team that did not want to be there and a team that was beaten before the game even started. After the first quarter and the beating they had just taken, one would think that this would continue, but the coaching staff kept coaching, as you could hear them giving props to the players, who made good plays as they came off of the field. Well, it seemed to have worked because, when the offense took the field to continue a drive started near the end of the opening quarter, the Redskins seem to have a little giddy up in their step. The result was a fourteen play, seventy-five-yard drive, that ended on a twelve-yard run by,Brad Potes. The point after kick by #48(not on the roster provided by the Newark Advocate preview)cut the Newark Catholic lead to,21-7,with 11:18 left in the half.

Newark Catholic needed just five-plays to score again. The score was set up by a sixteen-yard run by Gibson, who had some nice blocking again on the play. The score came on a twenty-seven-yard run by Gibson, who used some nice down field blocking and field vision to hit pay dirt. The point after made this a,28-7 game, with 9:56 left in the half.

Gibson was at it again, with 8:45 left in the half, with a fifty-six-yard run. that put the ball on the Utica nine-yard-line.Chapman, who showed he liked throwing to the far side of the field did so again with,7:41 left in the half, as he connected with Tanner Lake for another score. The point after was missed, after a penalty was called on Newark Catholic. Penalties were one of the few problems Newark Catholic had in this game. Most of them were aggressive penalties, but still a cause for a concern, come week eleven, where they won't be playing winless teams. After the missed point after kick this remained a,34-7 game, with 8:42 left in the half.

Mason Peddicord would pick off a Potes pass, with 7:41left in the half. Peddicord might be a better defensive player than he his an offensive one, but do not let that fool you because the 6-3 kid can ball.

One play after the Newark Catholic pick, the Redskins would pick off a Chapman pass, with 7:34 left. Making the pick for Utica was Mack Marston.

Utica would opt to go for it on fourth and four, with 5:09 left in the half, but a fumble was recovered by Liam Kirkpatrick, a 6-1,281 pound sophomore gave the Green Wave the ball again.

Chapman would take off on a eleven-yard gain,at the 3:28 mark of the quarter. The run gave Newark Catholic a first and goal at the Utica five-yard line.Tyler Scott ended the eight-play,sixty-five-yard drive, with a two-yard run, with 2:43 left in the half. The point after kick made this a,41-7 game.Scott has the speed, the strength and more talent than most young men his age and could be a MAJOR weapon, if the Newark Catholic staff ever decides to make him part of the offense. He is also a big-time hitter on defense.

On the ensuing kickoff Scott had the LICKING COUNTY FAN HIT OF THE GAME, when he blasted Charlie Spires. From there Utica's offense would be forced to punt. The punt was blocked and the ball was recovered by Connor Sheehan for another Green Wave score. The point after kick gave Newark Catholic a,48-7 lead, with 1:44 left.

The Redskins went sixty-three-yards on six-plays to make this a,48-13 game. The point after kick, was good by #48 to inch the Redskins a little closer,48-14,with 14>7 left in the half.

In the 2nd half Newark Catholic used the back up unit/JV team, while Utica left the starters in. The result was UGLY for Newark Catholic. The Back up unit/JV team would run fourteen-plays,gain twenty one-yards and complete two of five passes. The were several bad snaps and a flag or two was thrown on this group and another interception.

With 9:39 left in the third Potes was sacked by Noah Fodor for a loss of nine-yards.
From there a punt soon followed.

Wen Newark Catholic got the ball back they quickly were forced to punt, on the punt the Redskins fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Nolan Jurden, who scooped it up and scored, but the rules state that is not allowed.

The Green Wave back up unit would give the ball back to Utica, when Lucas Pierce threw another pick. The pick was made by Mack Marston, with 3:18 left in the quarter.

Potes would connect with Marston for a thirty-one-yard gain, with 1:48 showing on the clock.

Potes connected with Marston on a thirteen-yard scoring pass, with 7:47 left in the game. The point after made this a,48-21 game.

Newark Catholic would get one final score by their defense, when Scott picked off a Potes pass. Scott used his speed and down field blocking to score with ease. The point after kick made the final score,55-21.
