Game Report: Paint Valley needs O.T.to turn back Green Wave,21-20

Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

First, I want to say thanks to coach Hollon for the sideline and parking pass that you always leave for me, and the media packet.
Now on to what turned out to be a real competitive football game, even with all of the flags that were thrown.

Newark Catholic started this one out with a boom, with Grant Rausch taking the opening kickoff all the way to the Bearcats 19 yard line. The boom did not last long as the Paint Valley dominating defense showed early that they were ready for whatever the Green Wave tried.
The Green Wave offense took the ball down to the Bearcats one yard line and opted to go for it on fourth and one. Paint Valley easily stuffed quarterback, Kris Goodman short of the end zone, to keep this a scoreless game.

The Newark Catholic defense would bend, but not break on the Bearcats first drive. Paint Valley would run 11 plays and get 53 yards on the drive and unknowingly at the time, this would set the tone for much of the game, as the Bearcats would unofficially run 27 more plays than Newark Catholic did.

At the 4:05 mark of the quarter, Kris Goodman would have the boom lowered on him by,Josh Krech. The sack would force a Newark Catholic punt on the next play. Through two drives the Green Wave had a total of four yards.

With 2.25 left in the quarter, talented Paint Valley quarterback Anthony McFadden showed off his running ability, with a nice run to pick up a first down, when his team was facing a third and nine.
McFadden would use some fine work by his lineman to plunge up the gut of the Newark Catholic defense for another first down, when his team was facing a third and one, with 46.6 left in the quarter.

The Quarter would end with the game scoreless and the Bearcats marching.

McFadden would pick up another first down with his feet just seven seconds into the 2nd quarter. McFadden was showing early what a two weapon quarterback can do for a team.

The Green Wave defense has been the savior of this team for two years running and with 10:33 left in the half, it was the defense coming up big when Tyke Wilson #53 got to McFadden for a loss, to bring up 3rd and 14.
The Green Wave would force a punt as the defense stood tall on the next play.

On Newark Catholic's third drive Goodman was sacked by Drake Stanforth to force another Green Wave punt. Through three drives Newark Catholic had a grand total of 2 yards.

McFadden showed off his arm at the 7:58 mark of the 2nd quarter, when he connected with a open Tony Hatfield for a 46 yard touchdown. The point after kick by,Jacob Ott gave the Bearcats a,7-0 lead.

Newark Catholic got a nice kickoff return by,Jud Lewis who took the ball out to the Newark Catholic 37 yard line, with 7:53 left in the half.
The fourth drive of the night for Newark Catholic ended as quickly as it started. Newark Catholic would have negative five yards after their fourth drive of the game. They had connected on just 2 of 5 passes at this point of the game.

At the 3:58 mark of the quarter Cole Buchanan and Conner Sheehan teamed up to sack McFadden. The Green Wave defense was doing all they can to keep the team in the game, as the offense was struggling as badly as they have all season.

McFadden would shake off the sack and connect with Hatfield for a 36 yard gain, with 3:20 left in the half.
With 2:51 left in the half Teagan McFadden was held to a two yard gain as he was leveled by Buchanan and Nolan Jurden.
Teagan McFadden would have his number called again at the 1:50 mark of the quarter on a fourth and three situation. He would answer the call with a loud boom by going 14 yards for another Bearcat touchdown to make this a,13-0 game. The point after kick was blocked.

Rausch would get a long return on the kickoff to set up the first Newark Catholic score. The score came on a 2 yard run by Wes Jurden, with 7.1 seconds left in the half. Heath McCarthy missed the point after kick leaving this a,13-6 game.

That would be the score at the half. Up to this point Newark Catholic had totaled 42 yards of offense, but they were still very much in the game. The defense had bent twice and had given up 221 yards, but all things considered, they had played very well.

The third quarter would be a scoreless one as both defenses flexed their muscles as good defense often do.
At the 7:42 mark of the quarter, on a fourth and three call Teagan McFadden would head left, turn up field and pick up a first down for the Bearcats.

Anthony McFadden would pick up 11 yards with 7:17 left in the quarter, on another nice run.

The biggest play in the quarter was by Newark Catholic running back,Kyle Gibson, who picked up 53 yards on a huge run.

With 11:00 minutes left in the hard hitting contest, Sheehan teamed up with Wes Jurden to sack Anthony McFadden to get things going for the Newark Catholic defense.

Goodman used his feet at the 9:49 mark of the quarter to gain 9 yards and a first down, when the Green Wave was facing a third and eight. Newark Catholic looked to have kept the drive alive, when they went for it on fourth and three from the Bearcats forty four, but a penalty was called on the Green Wave.

Anthony McFadden would be sacked again at the 5:12 mark of the quarter by Nolan Jurden for a big loss. The Bearcats were forced to punt a short time later. On the punt Jud Lewis fielded the ball and took it all the way to the Paint Valley 14 yard line, with 4:21 left in the game.

From there Wes Jurden picked up 7 yards on a nice run with 4:00 left in the game. Wes Jurden would score on a one yard run with 2;28 left to bring the Green Wave within one point of the Bearcats. McCarthy came in and boomed the point after kick through to lock this one up at 13.

With 32.6 seconds left in the game Sheehan sacked Anthony McFadden to bring up a 4th and 14.

The score stayed that way as the clock ran out in regulation and overtime was called upon to decide a winner.

The Green Wave got the ball first and used three runs by Wes Jurden to go twenty yards for the go ahead score. McCarthy calmly walked on and added the point after kick to give Newark Catholic a,20-13 lead.

The Bearcats needed six plays to get their score in overtime, with Caleb Johnson scoring from 5 yards out.
The Bearcats opted to go for two and it would be Johnson taking it in for the winning score on a play Coach Hollon told me after the game, they had not ran all year. The two point run made the final score.21-20.

After the game, Coach Hollon said this was the biggest win in school history. As we were talking Coach Franks came up and said some kind words to Coach Hollon, very classy on his part.
