Legendary Nelsonville-York Coach Dave Boston Sr passes away
It is with great sadness to learn of the passing of former NY Coach Dave Boston Sr on Friday. Coach Boston coached the Nelsonville Greyhounds in their final year of 1966 and was the first ever Nelsonville-York Buckeye coach from 1967-1992. Coach Boston made NY football a powerhouse. RIP Coach.

Buckeyes play in honor of Dave Boston
By Kevin Wiseman Messenger sports editor
Updated Sep 24, 2016
LOGAN — Nelsonville-York quarterback Hunter Edwards turned and pitched the football to tailback Alex Mount on the first offensive snap for the Buckeyes in their game at Logan on Friday.
Mount picked up six yards on pitch-18, a play that was certainly familiar to Buckeye fans.
Legendary Nelsonville-York coach Dave Boston Sr. passed away on Friday after battling illness. A coaching giant in Athens County, Boston’s smash-mouth, power-football approach defined the Buckeyes’ program for a generation.
Pitch-18 was one of the coach’s favorite plays.
“Our first play of the game, we ran pitch-18,” current Nelsonville-York coach Rusty Richards said. “I know I called it 28-sweep, but tonight it was pitch-18, and that was just in honor of him.”
A moment of silence was held before Friday’s game at Logan Chieftain Stadium. Nelsonville-York went on to defeat Logan 35-0, gaining 436 yards of total offense and pitching a shutout. It’s the kind of performance against a long-time rival Boston would surely be proud of.
“I know he’s looking down on us,” Richards said. “We got word every week that even when he wasn’t doing well, he was still listening on the radio. That’s Buckeye Pride. It will never be matched. Just one hell of a man, one hell of a family.”
Boston had a career record of 167-109-4 in 27 seasons as head coach. He started in 1966, going 5-4 in the final football season for the Nelsonville Greyhounds.
Boston was then named the head coach of the new Nelsonville-York Buckeyes for the 1967 season. He never looked back in establishing the Buckeyes as one of the top programs in Southeast Ohio, coaching through the 1992 season.
Boston built the Buckeyes’ program from the ground up, helping out in some of the biggest decisions that helped build the foundation of N-Y’s current football tradition.
The newly-formed Buckeyes competed in the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League — just like the former Greyhounds had done since 1925.
The smallest school in the league, the Nelsonville-York School District received an invitation to join a newly-formed Tri-Valley Conference in February of 1969.
Boston spoke to the school about the benefits of joining a new league, according to an article in The Athens Messenger from Feb. 21, 1969. Boston said 59 of 65 boys competing in athletics favored leaving the SEOAL for the TVC.
Nelsonville-York would eventually join the TVC for the 1970 football season, and a successful era of football was quickly underway.
The Greyhounds and the Buckeyes never won a league title while competing in the SEOAL for 45 seasons.
That quickly changed as Boston continued to build the program in the TVC. Boston was first named TVC Coach of the Year in 1972, and the Buckeyes’ won their first league title in 1973.
Boston was named the TVC Coach of the Year seven times: 1972, 1976, 1981, 1982, 1987, 1990 and 1992. Belpre’s Ralph Holder is the only other TVC coach to win the award as many times.
The Buckeyes would win five TVC titles in the 1970s, as Boston had quickly established one of the top programs in the league.
Boston and the Buckeyes went to another level of success in 1981. Nelsonville-York went 10-0, qualifying for the state playoffs for the first time.
The Buckeyes went on to defeat Coal Grove to win a regional title, then beat Wheelersburg to advance to the state finals.
N-Y finished off a 13-0 season by defeating Otsego 34-16 in the Division IV state championship game.
Boston was carried off the field by his players afterwards, the crowning achievement of his career. It’s still the only team state title won by a Nelsonville-York squad.
The Buckeyes posted another 10-0 season in 1982, repeating as regional champions.
N-Y would win the TVC again in 1990 and 1992. Boston led the Bucks to the playoffs in his final season in ‘92, stepping aside while he was still on top.
The Buckeyes won nine TVC titles under Boston’s tutelage. His career record in TVC games was 110-35-3, a big reason why they’re the only school with 200 wins in league play. N-Y had 12 players win a TVC Offensive or Defensive MVP award during Boston’s tenure.
Boston was still a fixture on the Nelsonville-York staff for many seasons after his retirement. He aided the team as an assistant coach while his son, Dave Boston Jr., won six TVC Coach of the Year awards, as well as seven more TVC titles.
Richards competed against Boston while he was a player for Trimble in the TVC. Arch-rivals on the field, Richards said Boston always offered encouragement to Richards anyway.
“There were times when he got on me to encourage my team to get in the weight room,” Richards said. “I just always remembered that about him, even though we were the arch-enemy, played them week 10 back then, he would still be coaching me like I was one of his kids.”
The Buckeye players were informed before the game of Boston’s passing, and were reminded of one of the coach’s mottos.
“I said, ‘Hey, play every play like it’s your last, because you know he always had the saying: Pain is temporary, pride is forever,’” Richards said.
The Buckeyes then went out and earned their first win over Logan since the 2012 season.
“We pitched a shutout,” Richards said. “Back when he was coaching, they were known for having a great defense. That was a pretty good honor, hanging that goose egg tonight.”
Boston’s legacy will live forever at Nelsonville-York, as the Buckeyes will always play their home games at Boston Field. The team will wear decals honoring Boston the rest of the season.
“All the respect in the world,” Richards said. “What his family has done for Nelsonville-York, it will never be matched.”

While it was indeed a satisfying victory for Buckeye Nation — Logan had defeated N-Y three-straight times since absorbing a humiliating 50-0 loss at the hands of the Buckeyes four years ago — it also came just a few hours after the passing of a local football coaching legend.
Nelsonville-York's beautiful home football facility is named for Dave Boston Sr., who posted a 162-105-4 record at N-Y and won numerous league championships — as well as a state title in 1981 — as head coach of the Buckeyes from 1967 to 1992.
Coach Boston passed away Friday afternoon, just a few hours prior to kickoff. No doubt he would have been proud of his Buckeyes against a team he always considered an arch-rival.
Logan High School honored coach Boston with a moment of silence prior to the playing of the National Anthem.
