Best Team in your Program's History

Post by Chieftain2009 »

I figure since it's playoff time this would be a good discussion and maybe get some good opinions on this.

For Logan, I would have to say the 2000 team, hard to argue it. Joey Conrad at QB throw to his younger brother Johnny, that was a dynamic duo. Derek Harden at RB, who ended up walking on at OSU and playing special teams. They made a great run that year all the way to the state quarterfinals and ran into a loaded Upper Arlington team. I know there were a lot of great players on that team, top one that comes to mind is Simon Frasier who played defensive end at OSU. Logan was still D1 back then and had a great year. Of course, unbelievably the next year in '01 they went undefeated again before losing to Dublin Coffman in the 1st Rd (They had Brady Quinn).

2000 Logan Chieftains:

New Lexington - Win - 34-7
Nelsonville-York - Win - 28-3
Zanesville - Win 27-21
Warren - Win - 56-27
Point Pleasant - Win - 28-7
Athens - Win - 62-14
Marietta - Win - 48-0
Gallia - Win - 31-7
Jackson - Win - 62-14
River Valley - Win - 49-0

Playoffs:

@Westerville South - Win - 53-20
Pickerington - 28-26
Upper Arlington - Loss - 45-13

Who do you think is the best team in your program's history??

I will go with the 1965 team. They were ranked in the top ten when all the classes just had a top ten. Only three divisions...A----AA----AAA----Too many weapons Gasser, Hummel,Breining, Brant, Mowery, Courter ...the team was a well oiled machine.

Gasser went to Notre Dame, Courter to Wisconsin, Hummel to Marshall don't know about the rest.

1997 Meigs Marauder team or maybe one of the mid to late 80's teams. Anything before that is a little before time.

Yeah 64 was a good team. Beat Athens 44-22. Next year Athens went 9-0. Scored close to 300 points and only gave up 22

2014 Athens
#1 scoring offense in ohsaa history 861 points
Scored the most points at Steubenville in over 50 years
Gave Desales it's worst playoff lost in its school's history
Beat the two time defending state champ
Lost one of the greatest high school football finals 56-52
Mr Football

I agree Raider! Definitely 2014 Athens was the best one, probably the best offensive team in OHSAA history.

For Jackson, I think it's still the 1996 team.

They went 10-0 in the regular season, earned the school's first ever playoff berth, won a regional semi game (when only 4 teams per region made the playoffs), but lost to Columbus DeSales in the regional final. They led DeSales 7-0 in the 3rdQ, but the Stallions' depth wore them down, and a couple turnovers at inopportune times led to a 21-7 defeat. DeSales lost to Benedictine in a close game in the D3 State Title game that year.

Joey Boggs, the Jackson QB, played most of the season with a torn ligament in his knee, FB/DT Shannon Smith was out for the playoffs with an injury, and Jackson also lost All-Ohio OT Erik Davis to a knee injury on the first series of the DeSales game. That Jackson team didn't throw the ball much because they were more physically dominant than every opponent outside of DeSales, so they never really worked on the passing game. They had the athletes and talent to throw the ball with success, and if they had added that dimension to their offense, I don't think even DeSales could have held them in check.

They had the school's all-time leading rusher (Shane Wolford) in the backfield with several other talented backs, Boggs at QB, and the most dominant offensive line in Jackson history with Davis, Doug Wooten (both who started at OU), and others. Not to mention, probably the most physically imposing and aggressive defense I have seen at Jackson, led by names such as DT Chris Daniels, DE Phillip O'Neill, and LB Tom Curtis.

In my opinion, they're still the standard for Jackson football, but I also didn't see several of Gene Slaughter's teams back in the 1950s. 2011 and 2014 Jackson, who both went 10-0, could have an argument as well, but the physicality of that 1996 team is unmatched at Jackson in my mind.

1996 Jackson Ironmen Schedule

AT Wellston - Win, 50-0
AT Waverly - Win,14-12
VS Vinton County - Win, 40-6
VS Marietta - Win, 62-0
AT Athens - Win, 55-0
AT River Valley - Win, 41-6
VS Warren - Win, 64-42 (Warren went 9-1)
AT Logan - Win, 33-13
VS Gallia Academy, Win 41-0
VS Point Pleasant, Win 42-8

Playoffs

VS Hillsboro - Win, 7-3 - DIII Regional Semifinal at Portsmouth Spartan Stadium (Hillsboro featured future MSU linebacker TJ Turner who went on to play in the NFL)

VS Columbus St. Francis DeSales - Loss, 7-21 - DIII Regional Final at Lancaster Fulton Field (DeSales featured future NFL players Grant Bowman and Matt Stewart among several other D1 college football players)

Hard to remember now, but I think the following lineup is pretty accurate. If you're familiar with 1990s Jackson Football, there are some pretty great names on this list.

Jackson Offense

QB - Joey Boggs
RB - Shane Wolford
RB - Johnny King
FB - Shannon Smith
TE - Rodney Campbell
OT - Erik Davis
OG - Jarod Malone
OC - Doug Wooten
OG - JR Smith
OT - Kevin Workman
SE - Jason Brown

Jackson Defense

DE - Phillip O'Neill
DT - Chris Daniels
DT - Shannon Smith
DE - Jeremy Coffey
OLB - Craig Cusick
ILB - Tom Curtis
ILB - Jay Blankenship
OLB - Johnny King
CB - Jason Brown
CB - Joey Boggs
S - Shane Wolford

Been interesting 2000 Logan vs 2014 Athens. I don't see any punts in that game for either team

Athens in 1964 was the only team that scored more than 6 points against Logan.
In 1965 Logan scored 8 of those 22 points against Athens. If I remember right the 65/66 basketball team for Athens was real good.
