Well, looks like I'm going to miss this game (that sucks), but sometimes the kiddies have to come first. Taking them out camping to do the Youth Gun Season thing..lol Anyway, to all of you that parked in my yard for last weeks game up here in Logan, you are more than welcome to use my facilities again. I will move my vehicles around, if you have friends that may need a spot, that is ok also... Have a great one!!!!

Hate to say it but I really believe in the axiom "It's hard to beat a good team twice in once season". I've seen it prove true too many times. So, as much as I want to see Ironton win this one, I think Hartley wins by 7.

Ironton was D III back then so they weren't in Region 15. So I'll amend your question to "Has a state champ come from southeast Ohio since 1989?"

The answer depends upon exactly what is considered to be southeast Ohio. The way I see it, I think the answer would be NO.

The Hartley High School football team wants to make the most of the second chance it will get on Friday.

The Hawks, 10-2 overall, will be trying to avenge a 37-16 loss to Ironton on Oct. 15 when they go against the Fighting Tigers, also 10-2, in a Division IV Region 15 final at Logan.

"It's been about a month since we've played them," said Hawks coach Brad Burchfield, whose team last reached a regional final in 1997. "We know we have to play our best game of the season on Friday."

Hartley ran into a similar scenario when it faced Amanda-Clearcreek in the first week of the playoffs. The Hawks routed the Aces 48-10 in their Aug. 27 opener but found the going a little more difficult in the rematch. Tied at 7 at the half, Hartley forced four second-half turnovers and headed to a 40-21 win.

Tigers coach Bob Lutz said Ironton has had to face a regular-season opponent later in the playoffs three or four times in his 37-year tenure.

"I don't think anyone likes to play a team more than once," he said. "You never know what's going to happen. If it was an easy win the first time around, you know the other team is going to be out to get you and you're not sure how your team's going to respond."

Hartley hopes to be better prepared for Ironton's straight-T offense that utilizes running backs Tres Wilks and Tyler Hagar and fullback Brian Warner. The Tigers average 31.3 points, 288.3 yards rushing and 30.7 yards passing a game.

Warner leads the team with 865 yards and 15 touchdowns on 166 carries. Wilks has rushed for 810 yards and nine touchdowns on 102 carries, and Hagar has added 766 yards and 15 touchdowns on 104 carries. Quarterback Tom Waginger rushed for 430 yards and five touchdowns and completed 23 of 43 passes for 368 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions.

"You'll see some teams who will use a wing-T, but I think we're one of the few who use a straight-T," Lutz said. "Our kids have been taught to use the same thing since seventh grade. As long as they can do it correctly, we're going to keep using it."

"It's an unusual offense," Burchfield said. "The first time we saw it, it took us awhile to figure it out. But this is our second time seeing it, and we're a little more comfortable going against it."

The Hawks are going to rely on the play of defensive lineman Evan Jackson, (45 solo tackles, 26 assists and seven sacks) and linebacker Jarrod Zang (45 solo tackles and 38 assists) to stop the running game.

One of the best ways to halt the Tigers' offense is to make sure it doesn't get started. Hartley relies on a ground game led by running back Noah Key, who has rushed for 517 yards and eight touchdowns in two playoff games. He surpassed the 2,000-yard mark in a 39-26 victory over Heath on Nov. 12.

"Key's just an outstanding running back," Lutz said. "He's one of those players that you hold your break every time he touches his ball. But they also have a very good fullback (Zang) to complement Key."

Zang has rushed for 810 yards and six touchdowns, followed by Omar Lane (560 yards, eight touchdowns) and JaWaun Woodley (197 yards, four touchdowns).

The Tigers have shut down the running games of Coshocton and Highland in the first two playoff games. They held Coshocton's Zach Shaw, a 1,000-yard rusher and an Indiana recruit, to 30 yards in 32-12 win on Nov. 5 and Highland's Artie McAndrews, another 1,000-yard rusher, to 15 yards in a 43-7 win on Nov. 12.

The 16 points Hartley scored in the first meeting was a season-low as the Hawks turned over the ball four times.

"Turnovers are going to be a big key for this game," Burchfield said. "The other big thing is how we handle the momentum swings in the game."

gahs4ever wrote:Got screwed on the distance??? Logan used to be a league game for Ironton for crying out loud. A differential of about 35 or so miles doesnt exactly qualify as a screwing; especially on a turf field you just played on. If you could go there last week, why not this week to play a team you handled pretty well in the regular season.

Some of you want the finals in Columbus, which is a heck of a lot farther than Logan, and as it is, if you win next week ultimately you will have to go to the Canton/Massillon area. What's the difference?

You have the home stands with seat backs, great concessions, all the parking in the world, and the turf will not be a problem regardless of the weather. Who could ask for more?

Some of the ones upset with the choice of Logan wanted Hartley to travel all the way to Jackson. Would that have been fair?

Good luck Fighting Tigers and all my buddies down there. I predicted you would make it to week 13. Thanks for making me look good.
love how you changes your logo from a galia helmet to a ironton helmet
