For the 41% who say they dont care about the band, try to imagine what a football game would like without them. As it stands, the team runs onto the field as the band plays the fight song, and every fan stands and cheers with pride. As your team is driving the ball and when they score, are you going to sing the fight song acapella? Halftime would be very quiet as well, and a good band can actually inspire the team with the music they play. Ask a football player sometime.

Music appreciation is a very important part of our children's education, and many who learn to play instruments in HS continue to enjoy them long after graduation. My cousin graduated from Ohio State over 30 years ago and he still marches in the Ohio State alumni band. Anytime you see the band do quad script Ohio you can bet he is out there on the field somewhere.

I will never understand people who cannot see the value or importance of music education in all of it's forms.

High school and College football wouldn't be the same without a band. There is no doubt about that.

for the most part, I would rather talk to band people than football people.

talking to music people usually generates more interesting, if not smarter, conversations

I suppose the 40%ers will change their minds once they lose a valuable asset to school spirit and have nothing to look forward to help hype up the crowd in support of the team. But by then it would too late. That hype can give teams an emotional boost to play better. Many a game is won through that emotional boost. School spirit is what makes students want to come to school and do better in what ever they do out of a sense of pride for themselves, the school, and the community. If you are not in high school band JOIN or at least support the band students that are supporting your teams.

One additional thought - A parade whether it be Homecoming, Veteran's Day, Christmas, Memorial Day isn't a parade without a marching band.

Band is more than half time show. At competistions we compete in front of 500 or more people
halftime shows are our practice.

Why is it that band is considered a sport on this site and powerlifting isn't? Band is annoying period. When coaches are trying to put people in the game, no one can here because of the band.

I'm not going to bash anyone if they like them that is their choice. They have made their case for them and I will give mine. I do think that the schools would be better off without both. Here is why I think so.

1 The band usually is nothing more than a drain to the football program. They usually get all the money from the concessions when it would be better used for the football program.

2 Cheerleading speaks for itself who needs all the drama that comes with it.Not to mention all the trouble the parents keep stired up.

I like the band and I coach high school football. In fact my oldest son is in the band and my middle son plays trumpet in the band and plays Jr. High football. My oldest is so good he is going to Marshall next year and he'll be playing snare in the drumline. By the way haters they are paying for 3/4 of his tutiton.

you are right orange and brown it was sad to learn that Belpre cut their band out... I think something could have been compromised to keep it!

I just think that it was awful to learn that they cut there band. As I recall they had a pretty good size band to. My six year old wants to play quads in band when he gets older and I would be very upset if NY cut there band(Will never happen).

Sometimes the band can pump the team up if they are good enough

We at Logan take our band very seriously. I remember back in the 90s when the football teams weren't as good as they are now the band was as good as they could possibly be. They were a very professional looking and sounding unit, and always had a lot of fun.

Today our band has declined in numbers as well as quality, but i still enjoy them very much. I just don't like woodwinds and quad drums, those are my only problems with most marching bands today.

OSU's band is the best in the country because it is military style marching and it is all brass. A sound that goes along with the collision sport of football. If i wanted to hear woodwinds i'd go to the Columbus symphony.

A poster after my own heart.

I enjoyed Logan's band for the most part. Enjoyed them a lot more when they were all hitting the
chair step together. It can get ugly real quick when they are even slightly out of phase.

I remember those days in the 90's as well, I was in River Valley's band at the time. Our football team even
scored some victories up on the hilltop.

I am not a fan of woodwinds but leave the quads alone. I enjoy a lot of bands including Logans. I also enjoy NY's band as well(GO BUCKS!!!!)
The Ohio University Marching 110 is the best in my opinion followed by OSU.
I think band is an essential part of the friday night football experience. We went down to Belpre this year and they had no band. I was very dissapointed. I also enjoy the marching compititions very much.(The Buckeye Classic Rules!!!!)

I like bands when they are good and know when to play.
I wish Portsmouth had a good band. I think it really adds to the atmosphere of Friday nights and can be an asset to the team. Our band seems to occupied with themselves and doesn’t pay attention to the game and game situations.
Portsmouth's band at one time was very good but has steadily gone down since Billy Watson retired.

On the other hand Ironton’s band is a great part of any Ironton game. They are always rocking Eye of the Tiger in the west endzone and make it hard to hear plays when driving into or playing out of that side.

I was about to say, Portsmouth used to have one hell of a band.

Sad to hear that they are going down hill, hopefully that is only temporary.

woodwinds, I can live without, except saxes, saxes are awesome.

but leave the quad players alone.

p.s., anyone who ever said "band is not a sport", check this video out.

here is my 2 cents. the woodwind thing.... in a hs band playing a half time show????? I HATE IT . i wanta see a marching band! not some band that has 43 yard tractors dragging zylaphones, (sp) a drum kit, bells, keyboard, bass guitar, etc...etc... :122248 :? :122248

a hs band should be a marching band! not a concert band trying to play some song from a boardway musicial to a anger crowd of seo football fans sitting at a hs football game in the rain on a friday night. don't get me wrong. its not the kids choice. its the band directors. some have told me that is their time to practice for band competions.... you practice at a half time show??????
aaahhhh what are they doing at band class and practice??

marching bands are for firing the fans up by playing songs most everyone home and visting fans know. playing fight songs not trying to leave them scratching there heads wondering what there listening to or just putting them to sleep.

To counter your first statement, in Coal Grove the Athletic Boosters run the consession stands so our band gets nothing, as for the cheerleading statement I could care less either way, I don't pay attention to them at games anyway. The band is as important on Friday night as the football team, they both need each other to make the night the best for the fans.
