For area fans not from either of these two schools, this might seem on the surface to be a meaningless game between two bottom feeders of their league, but I assure you nothing could be further from the truth. The coaches and kids represent proud athletic programs that expect to win and it will take more than one disappointing season to temper that pride.

Historically the Blue Devils have owned the Tigers, winning 18 of the 22 SEOAL games played between the two since Marietta entered the league in 1985. In 2002, Marietta and GAHS shared the SEOAL title, but GAHS beat the Tigers 21-7 in Gallipolis that year. Last year MHS ended a 7 game Blue Devil win streak in the series. For Blue Devil fans that could have been a 14 game streak as the only blemish from 1992-2005 was a 14-3 loss during the Fenik fiasco in Gallipolis.

At any rate, both squads come into week 10 with identical 1-8 records, and both want to send their seniors out as winners. Anyone who thinks there is any quit in the Devils should view the game tape of the Zanesville game of last night. GAHS found themselves down 21-0 at the half; due in large part to four Devil turnovers. But the Blue & White came out and marched right down the field on about a 90 yard scoring drive to get back in the game, and in the fourth quarter ZHS tried repeatedly to put us away with more scores (twice going for it on fourth down and another time trying a fake punt) only to be thwarted each time.

I heard on the radio this morning that following the game, Zanesville AD Scott Aaronhalt came into the GAHS locker room and praised our kids for their hard play and never giving up. Classy move, and Im sure appreciated by a team that has worked their hindparts off all year and seen little reward on the scoreboard.

Marietta comes into the game with the worst scoring defense in the area, allowing 41.8 ppg against, and in the last seven games no one has scored fewer than 35 on the Tigers. Marietta scores at a 16.6 clip.

GAHS allows 31.6 ppg but since Logan put up 57 on us in week three have shown dramatic improvement. Most of the points surrendered havent been on the defense as much as by turnovers and special teams breakdowns. It takes all three areas clicking to be successful; a lesson the Blue Devils have learned the hard way.

In game against common opponents (a dangerous and foolish way to predict a game), both are 0-4 against Portsmouth, Logan, Zanesville and Jackson. Marietta played arguably their best game of the season in a 21-35 loss at Jackson.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but turnovers and penalties will no doubt be the prime factors in who gets the "W."

After seeing both teams play, I would have to give the edge to GAHS.....Blue Devils will win.

I bet people from Marietta will be stunned to see how many people from Gallia Academy show up. I think GA's fans are probably the best traveling school in the league right now

Very true. I was beginning to think that I had lost my mind, but will never have any regrets for going to a Blue Devil game. I can't explain how proud I am of our kids.

Frosh are 4-2, losing games to Logan & Ironton when three or four frosh were moved up to the reserves after three or four reserves got promoted to the varsity.

Seventh and eighth graders are 3-4 or 2-5. Lost track of their records past two weeks because of the bad weather.

The Gallipolis Blue Devils win their second game. (I've always called them Gallipolis. Back in the day I guess when nobody had to be politically correct, all the schedules, newspapers, radio, tv, team programs and all even for the league schools always wrote down and referred to them as just Gallipolis so I guess it stays that way for some of us oldtimers.)

I'm not a GAHS alum but I'm rather proud of the historical significance behind the name "Gallia Academy." To quote from the football program:



And of course to continue the story, the NEW Gallia Academy High School opened it's doors this past August in Centenary, and the remodeling of the former high school on Fourth when completed will house the Gallia Academy Middle School. Washington Elementary is also undergoing remodeling, and both Green and Rio Grande Elementaries are seeing new buildings being constructed as we speak.

So, let me get this straight. When River Valley formed I thought they consolidated Kyger Creek, North Gallia, Southwestern and Hannan Trace. I know the southern end of the county then got back essentially the Hannan Trace contingent to form South Gallia. Now, is all of the old Southwestern district part of GAHS now ?

It is my understanding that the former SW students can attend River Valley (which is now located in Bidwell, about 10 mi away) or South Gallia because the southern part of the SW district is actually closer to SG. Im talking about the Cadmus area.

Then under open enrollment, the students can come to GAHS. Since the new HS is located on SR 141 in Centenary, about 4 mi south of Gallipolis, it is actually closer for country students who live in the Patriot/Gage area than either SG or RV. I believe it may be true that some of the SW students might even attend Oak Hill because that isnt that far for some of the Centerpoint area families.

I suppose it is an individual preference thing and what each family thinks is best or most convenient for their needs.

Pethel leads GAHS defenders in Zanesville contest

Shaun Pethel, 6-2, 200-pound senior defensive end, was Gallipolis Gallia Academy’s top defensive player in last Friday’s 28-7 defeat at Zanesville..

Pethel was credited with five initial hits, three assists, one sack and one tackle for a loss.

Sophomore defensive back Brandon Taylor recorded five initial hits, two assists, and had two pass breakups.

Junior Ben Saunders was credited with three initial hits, one assist, one sack and three quarterback hurry-ups.

Sophomore Drew Young had three solos and five assists while senior Jared Gravely recorded three initial hits, two assists, one tackle for a loss and recovered a Zanesville fumble.

All told, GAHS had 40 solo tackles against the Z-Devils, 25 assists, five break-up passes, two tackles for losses, one fumble recovery, three quarterback hurry-ups two sacks and one pass interception.

After nine games, Gravely and Nate Gordon have recovered two fumbles, B. Saunders has 36 solo tackles and six quarterback hurry-ups, Dylan Hunter has 23 assists, Gravely has three sacks and seven tackles for losses, Dingess has three pass interceptions and four pass breakups.

Hey questionmark, Get real the bullpuppies play a waterdown schedule and their chances of a playoff apperance is slim to none!

If Athens is gonna continue to play schools like Hannan they really shouldn't worry about the playoffs anyway.

Finally, someone who gets it! Athens has a choice. Play an SEOAL like schedule with schools of similar size and not win very many games, thus not making the playoffs. Or play their current schedule which allows them to win games against smaller schools and not make the playoffs. I guess they have to decide which is better for them.

Off topic, but since someone posted it I will answer and ask. Exactly WHEN did Athens play Hannan in football?

Or are you confusing Hannan with Wahama? If so Athens might be surprised this Friday when they play the 7-1 White Falcons.

Both these teams have been near the top in the last several years. They are both having a poor season. This game I see as a competative game between proud schools. I would expect them both to play to their absolute best. This game in my humble opinion will be decided by the play of the special teams. Since it is at Marietta, I will go with the Washington Countians 20-17. Wish both teams good luck and a better 2010 season.
